Spring Conference 2022

Motion #D08

Stonewall and disaffiliation from diversity champions scheme

Motion not debated

Synopsis

Conference instructs GPEX to disaffiliate from the Diversity Champions Scheme from next financial year on grounds of value for money, reputational risk management and sound interpretation of the Equality Act 2010.

Motion

Insert into Record of Organisational Statements:

Conference recognises the extraordinary role played by Stonewall, since its inception in 1989, in spearheading LGBTIQ+ campaigns. Lately, however, public organisations and bodies, including the Equality and Human Rights Commission, have found reasons to disaffiliate from their Diversity Champions Scheme. Principally, justified criticism has been made of Stonewall’s interpretation of the Equality Act 2010 - in promoting misinterpretations of the Act as how they would like it to be not how it is.

Amendment #1

Not yet debated

1! Insert in second sentence, after “Equality and Human Rights Commission” the following:

”BBC and UCL,” so that this sentence now reads: “Lately, however, public organisations and bodies, including the Equality and Human Rights Commission, BBC and UCL, have found reasons to disaffiliate from their Diversity Champions Scheme.”

Amendment #2

Not yet debated

Delete from third sentence, “misinterpretations of”, so sentence now reads Justified criticism has been made of Stonewall’s interpretation of the Equality Act ! in promoting the Act as how they would like it to be not how it is.

The Green Party needs to be able to ensure sound interpretation and application of the Equality Act in its internal governance and campaigning work. Conference is not satisfied that our rolling annual £2,500 subscription to the Scheme represents value for money going forward. Nor is our continued subscription consistent with good reputational risk management and sound interpretation of the Equality Act.

Amendment #3

Not yet debated

Insert new sentence at end of second paragraph:

”As a matter of principle, these monies should be rotated around other governance or campaign priorities for the Party, including climate change or disability campaigns, and not automatically renewed.”

Amendment #4

Not yet debated

Insert new third paragraph:

”Stonewall has every right to undertake political campaigns as a charity, but our affiliation also jeopardises our independence as a political party, or perception thereof, to interrogate statistics and value assumptions in developing policies of our own ! without bias.”

Conference instructs GPEX to disaffiliate from the Diversity Champions Scheme from the next financial year.
